Conditions

In many rivers rising water coloured with silt, means spending the days in lodge, shopping in the nearest town or something like that.

But once again the Årgård River is different. Some of the best fishing ever in the river have taken place during what is normally considered to be impossible.

At one occasion, the river was so high that the water was flooding the banks and the nearby forest. This didn’t stop a couple of guys from catching salmon.

But on the other hand, also extreme low-water conditions can offer good fishing. The sea-pool is large and relatively deep, and when the river is to low for the fish to enter, they collect in this pool and there can be a fantastic still-water fishing there.

For the salmons NOT to enter the river, it has to be really low. There has been endless discussions over the years of the minimum water for the fish to enter, but it is clear that salmon is entering the river when the water is over +20 c, sun is shining and the water is so low that the back of the fish is in the air.

In other words, is there seldom that the river let you down completely. There is always salmons to catch – it is just a matter of changing places and techniques according to the conditions. That’s why the Årgårds River is so attractive to us fly fishermen.
